Polishing and Buffing Metal Surfaces
Polishing and buffing are mechanical processes that smooth the surfaces of metal parts and result in a matte or mirror finish.
They are used to enhance the appearance of a product, produce a reflective surface, remove oxidation and prevent contamination and oxidation.
Polishing removes thin layers of the surface eliminating the smallest burrs, particles, unevenness and impurities. It leaves behind a shiny surface with high strength and low adhesion.
Abrasive belts are used for polishing that produces a brushed finish and buffing uses cloth wheels with applied compounds to achieve a bright mirror finish.
The desired results are determined by the level of abrasiveness of the grit belt and whether buffing is performed.
